George J. Reed family papers, 1795-1891.

Correspondence, diary, and indenture. Chiefly correspondence between Reed and his wife Mary L. Reed during his Civil War service as chaplain of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. Provides a description of military camp life from a chaplain's point of view and an account of the battle of Shiloh (1862). Includes a diary kept by Reed (1865-1866) describing his travels and preachings in Kentucky. The diary has a copy (in Reed's hand) of a journal kept by his grandfather, William Bingham, on his trip from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Kentucky and Ohio (1795). Correspondents include Will and Sarah Reed, D. B. Reed, and George Bingham.
